The Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a federally funded program that helps income eligible pregnant and breastfeeding women, women who recently had a baby, and infants and children up to the age of 5 who are at medical or nutritional risk.
About WIC:
WIC is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, administered by the Ohio Department of Health, and operates locally as a program of the Sidney-Shelby County Health Department.
WIC Provides:
Nutrition education, breastfeeding education, support, and breast pumps.
Referral to prenatal and pediatric health care and other maternal and child health service programs (i.e., Medicaid, food stamps, and immunizations).
Supplemental and Highly nutritious foods.
Eligibility Requirements:
Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who have recently had a baby, infants and children up to the age five.
Determined by WIC health professional to be at medical or nutritional risk.
Must be a resident of Shelby County.
Must meet income requirements (see below) or have a current Medical Card.
WIC Breastfeeding Peer Helper:
WIC breastfeeding Peer Helper provides new and expectant mother and their support persons with information and advice on the wonderful benefits of breastfeeding. The Peer Helper lives in the community and is part of the population served by WIC. She was carefully selected based upon her years of personal breastfeeding experience along with knowledge in the areas of techniques and counseling skills. She works closely with pregnant women and women in the early stages of breastfeeding, women who are weaning their babies, and their support persons.
